Description: Merrick's Backcountry line adds freeze-dried raw meat pieces directly into standard kibble, aiming to give owners some of the appeal associated with raw feeding — higher perceived palatability and a meat-forward nutritional profile — without the handling, storage, and food-safety considerations that come with true raw diets. Built specifically for large breeds, the formula accounts for the higher overall energy needs and joint-health considerations relevant to bigger dogs, who carry more body weight across their skeletal structure over a lifetime than smaller breeds. As a grain-free formula, it also falls within the ingredient category the FDA has been investigating since 2018 for a possible link to canine DCM — a connection that remains an open research question, and one specifically worth discussing with a veterinarian for large breed dogs given that larger dogs are more frequently represented in the case reports reviewed so far. Freeze-dried raw components should still be handled with reasonably clean hands and stored per the bag's guidance, since while freeze-drying reduces some food safety concerns compared to fully raw or frozen raw diets, it doesn't eliminate them entirely.
